Planned Plans underway for a new bike/pedestrian path in the Arana Gulch area known as the Broadway-Brommer Path. Construction for new bike lanes along busy Soquel Avenue will begin in summer, 2006. The Beach Street project is entering final stages of construction with the installation of rubber islands that will separate the bike path from the motor lane. Sharrows (shared pavement markings) will be placed on streets under the City's Bicycle Transportation Plan for future bike lanes. The importance of the sharrow project should be recognized because it brings awareness to road motorist and bicyclist the regulations of the California Vehicle Code. Currently in design is the plan for a pedestrian/bike bridge and under-crossing over the San Lorenzo River.

Other Currently the City of Santa Cruz is working with individual city schools and the Community Traffic Safety Coalition to implement an international movement known as Safe Routes to School. Thus far they have developed a program that includes classes focused on pedestrian and bicycle safety (available to grades K-5) and maps that show safe routes to local schools. The goal of the program is to promote the safe use of bicycles and walking as a means of transportation to school.
