The last two weekdays of the month will find a ton of bicycle energy filling the peninsula as our 5th Annual
Scott has been celebrated by TV, radio, newspapers and crowds, sometimes numbering in the hundreds, in many of the big cities he has already visited. And in each of them, he is calling for a bikeway that connects these population centers to one another. Since the purpose of the ride is to publicize the National Bicycle Greenway's (NBG) mission to first connect San Francisco and Boston with a network of safely bikeable roads and paths before we involve the rest of the nation, you can help Scott by riding the casual, flat 20 miles from San Jose City Hall to Palo Alto City Hall.
And this route is easy and pleasant using a combination of lightly trafficked neighborhood streets and even the bike paths near the San Francisco Bay that San Jose bike coordinator, John Brazil, got together for us last year. I might not be the only one on a HiWheel this year. I'm working on a couple of local HiWhel celebrities who just might dust off the cob webs to join us!
And once we cross over San Antonio from Middlefield, we'll be joined by local celebrity, Will the Snake Man. He'll join us with his two boa constrictors for the last several miles to City Hall.
Will try to see if we can get Whole Foods to cater our reception once again with their tasty sandwich treats!!
If you want to join in the fun and you live in Palo Alto, we will be taking the 10:07 train from the California Ave station arriving at the Diridon station in San Jose at 10:38 for the 1.3 miles ride to City Hall.

Well, we had awesome weather in Reno for what was officially proclaimed to be National Bicycle Greenway Day for the City of Reno. While the riders in the Tour de France burst their lungs struggling to the tops of barren, wind-swept peaks, Reno riders casually rode downtown and gathered outside City Hall to share their concerns for safe cycling with our local government.
In attendance were Reno Counsel member Dave Aiazzi, Tim Healion and Marnee Benson (the folks who make the Tour de Nez pro bike race happen for Reno), Mike Damon (president of the Reno Wheelmen Cycling Club), Janet Carson (the real powerhouse behind the Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway project), Terry Mcaffee and other members of the Procrastinating Pedalers Bicycle Club, Channel 2 news (watch the TV at 5 PM tonight) and a few other cyclists and folks who's names I sadly forget. Let's not of course forget our cross-country NBG scouts Scott Campbell and Pam Slocum.
We discussed current projects and sources of financing for cycling related interests. Dave indicated that he can do much to help cyclists get what they need, but city government relies on the community for input. Unfortunately, too often there is no input, so the wishes of local cyclists go unheard.
After our discussion, we all wished Pam and Scott a safe ride over the hill to Folsom. I'll be riding over there as well, but can't leave until Saturday. Should be a lot of fun, and most importantly...I hope it will be safe.

To be able to safely and pleasurably ride a bicycle from Boston to San Francisco is one of the main goals of the National Bicycle Greenway (NBG). Folsom Mayor Andy Morin, city officials and local bike and American River Parkway (ARP) advocates will meet NBG riders and scouts at the world's first long distance power plant, the Folsom Powerhouse, to send this vision to American River communities as far as West Sacramento. Making sure former bike store owner,
Riding a show stopping 19th Century bike and making sure they make all their receptions on time will be famed HiWheel cyclist and Rancho Cordova resident Jacques Graber. Graber will also be leading other HiWheel cyclists including San Diego celebrity, Marty Wilson, Sacramento bike coordinator, Ed Cox, HiWheel replica manufacturers, Greg and Adam Barron, and NBG Director and "Awake Again" author Martin Krieg.
Other local cyclists will join in the fun, including Wai Chong from the Folsom Area Bike Advocates and Jack Martin, aka Captain Hydrate, of Folsom based Gomber Hydration Systems. Like he's done annually for the last two years now, Jack will be towing a massive trailer filled with ice and cold drinks for the riders.
As Scott spreads the NBG word, he feels he will also be "helping the American River communities to become a cycling Mecca the likes of which are unknown in the world". He says that "As more and more cyclists and their families discover the unparalleled biking found on the APR; as the word gets out about a bikeway without the cars and buildings and noise of the city that lies just beyond, the ARP two wheel heaven will prove the NBG notion that a bicycle based economy can rule the world".

The lead rider for the 5th Annual National Mayors' Ride, Campbell has already been celebrated by TV, radio, newspapers and crowds, sometimes numbering in the hundreds, in 26 of the 32 big cities he is visiting as he calls for a bikeway that will connect these population centers to one another. As Scott's public ride, where all cyclists are invited, moves next to Oakland, he will be led by Car Free Berkeley Councillor, Kriss Wortington and Car Free Oakland architect, Ron Bishop. Also joining them will be NBG director and "Awake Again" author, Martin Krieg who will be riding a HiWheel, the kind of bike made in the 19th Century. Also leading the charge on their HiWheels will be Greg and Adam Barron, who manufacture these stately machines in nearby Alameda. Another cyclists who will join in the fun will be Oakland Councillor Nancy Nadel. She will ride all of them to her City Hall where representatives from the BART Greenway, Drive for Caldecott Bike Tunnel and Oakland Car Free day will all say a few words.
As Scott spreads the NBG word, he is also doing advance scouting work for Krieg who is riding the Mayors' Ride route next summer with his new book, "How America Can Bike and Grow Rich". As he writes it, Krieg is finding many parallels between the Lincoln Highway, and the National Bicycle Greenway. First billed as an 'Appeal to Patriots', according to Krieg, "The Lincoln Highway brought the unabated car sprawl that is choking America today. The NBG sees a bike connection between San Francisco and Boston as a way to inspire a new kind of war. We will fill this nation's roads with bikes. And as we do, we will be vanquishing the new enemies that have resulted from our love affair with the automobile, the overweight epidemic, wars for oil, and time wasting and stress inducing traffic jams".
